Is your German store
clear from start to finish?

A wording checklist for English-speaking ecommerce teams with an existing German website.

Start with the customer journey

Read the German version in the order a customer uses it: product, delivery information, cart, checkout and help. A page can read well on its own while contradicting another page.

Keep a simple list: page URL, current wording, the fact or policy it must reflect, and the proposed change. Resolve unknown facts before editing the promise.

1. Keep product terms and forms of address consistent

Choose the German terms for each product, option and order status, then check them in navigation, product pages and help content. Use du or Sie consistently according to your brand’s decision. Switching halfway through the purchase makes the store feel disconnected.

2. Separate dispatch, delivery and what happens next

Check whether each sentence describes the warehouse step, carrier transit or arrival. The German wording should reflect the actual process and any conditions your team can confirm. If delivery is delayed, tell the customer what action follows instead of adding a promise your team cannot support.

3. Make tracking and returns instructions usable

Read the answer as a customer with one specific problem. Can they tell which link to use, what information to provide and what your team will do next? Keep the wording aligned with the real tracking and return process.

4. Compare a wording change with the policy behind it

Here is one demonstration from our German wording examples. The policy and text are invented, so this is an editing example, not a client result.

Example policy: Approved fictional policy: dispatch within two business days; transit estimate three to five business days after dispatch; no guaranteed arrival date.

Before

Bestelle heute. Ihr Paket ist in drei Tagen garantiert da.

After

Wir versenden Ihre Bestellung innerhalb von zwei Arbeitstagen. Ab dem Versand beträgt die voraussichtliche Lieferzeit drei bis fünf Arbeitstage. Als Arbeitstage gelten Montag bis Freitag, ausgenommen Feiertage. Einen festen Zustelltermin können wir nicht garantieren.

Consistent formal address; preserves dispatch timing, makes transit an estimate, and invents no guarantee.

Read all five examples and their English explanations.

5. Check the text customers actually see

Open the German storefront and walk through product options, cart messages and help widgets. App and theme content can sit outside the pages you edited. An English label inside an otherwise German checkout still needs attention.

For Shopify stores, the official Translate & Adapt documentation explains supported content and translation limits. Check the rendered storefront as well as the translation editor.

6. Connect the website with the customer conversation

Use the same terminology in the storefront, help pages and customer replies. If a support question exposes a missing answer, update the relevant website wording as well. Clear German needs both an accurate policy and a visible next step.
